BooK Olympics book days
As part of RIF NOVA's 2024 BOOK OLYMPICS fund-raiser, there was some fun-raising, too! Several schools held Olympics-related book distributions -- complete with flags, games, medals, an Olympics photo booth, and, of course, books galore!
Dr. Charles E. Drew Elementary -- July 2024
When LEGO bricks become bateaux (boats) on the Seine River in Paris, toilet paper rolls become gymnasts and popsicle sticks their balance beams, a paint stick and some aluminum foil turn into a shot put throw, and red cups and yarn become a relay race -- it's Book Olympics time at Arlington's Drew Elementary School! For a week before this clever Book Olympics book distribution, librarian and RIF NOVA liaison and board member Dora Sue Black led her summer school students in the creation of all things Olympics, teaching them about the Games and getting them excited about their upcoming RIF NOVA book distribution. Then it was time for the games to begin! As they entered the library, the children were greeted with their own "opening ceremony" with boats built by 4th graders and a tableau of athlete images colored by the younger students. Then they could choose from an array of Olympic Game options set up throughout the library. Fun? You bet! An experience to remember? For sure! And books to keep? Absolutely!

Polk Elementary School -- June 2024
Alexandria's Polk Elementary School held a Book Olympics distribution during its end-of-school field day. With the Olympics theme music playing, children entered the library excited to hear the familiar tune and delighted to be festooned with a gold medal around every neck. How fun was that to get a GOLD medal -- just check out those happy faces!!! Polk librarian Mark Tierney had his camera rolling and created a video that is a "must watch" for sure! Click here or on any of the Polk photos below to find Mark's video. Special thanks to Mark, liaisons Kathy Harrington and Catie Brownback, and the Polk PTA for a Book Olympics to remember!
Each child could pick two books, thanks to a RIF NOVA / RIF grant -- and the book picking was energetic, to say the least!
Then it was time to inscribe each book and step to the podium for photos to capture the magical Book Olympics moments!

Vaughan Elementary School -- May/June 2024
Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary School's Book Olympics was a celebration to remember! Children in grades 3-5 at this Prince William County school entered the library to hear the Olympics theme song playing and to see the space draped with flags of every country -- with an exhortation to "Go For Gold"! Then, it was games galore as the children competed in teams representing five continents of the world. Librarian and RIF NOVA liaison Donna McDonald and library assistant Emily Addinall directed the kids to four game stations and kept track of team points. Winning teams received a gold, silver, or bronze medal after the points were tallied, along with two new books to keep provided by RIF NOVA/National RIF grant. Fun? Yep! In spades!
Crestwood Elementary School -- May 2024
Crestwood Elementary's librarian and RIF NOVA liaison Vicki Spino offered several fun Book Olympics book distribution options for children at this Fairfax County School. First, the children watched a video about the history of the Olympics. Then, they were offered a word search or color by numbers activity -- both about the Olympic games. After that, it was time to pick a RIF NOVA book-for-keeps to take home for the summer.
